who triggered the fbi petraeus probe revealed. we're getting new information about who this veteran agent is and how he got involved. and a storm victim struggling to stay warm with no power for weeks gets a personal visit from the president of the united states. we want to welcome our viewers in the united states and around the world. i'm wolf blitzer. you're in "the situation room." >>> we've got breaking news. we're getting new information about what then-cia director david petraeus knew about the benghazi attack and when he knew it. let's get right to our pentagon correspondent barbara starr. barbara, what are you learning? >> wolf, i have just spoken to someone, a long-standing source who has spoken to david petraeus. this is someone on his level professionally. this person is directly familiar from petraeus with his thinking, with petraeus' thinking about what he will tell congress tomorrow about the benghazi attacks. david petraeus wants to tell congress that he knew almost immediately after the september 11th attacks that the group ansar al sharia, that al qaeda sympathizing
relationships with top military brass. the fbi traced those e-mails become to paula broadwell's computer where they discovered the evidence of broadwell's affair with david petraeus. but it doesn't stop there. abc news has learned that general allen also received an anonymous e-mail traced to paula broadwell painting jill kelley as a seductress. a further look by the fbi into kelley's e-mails revealed hundreds between kelley and general allen. 20,000 to 30,000 pages of communications in all. but a source familiar with the e-mails say they contain no evidence of a sexual relationship. supporting what allen says -- instead, they're described as friendly, perhaps flirtatious, but routine. mostly about meetings with ambassadors and dinner parties. in one note, kelley tells the general she saw him on tv. he responds -- thanks, dear, you're a sweetheart. many e-mails from kelley to general allen's wife. the two couples were good friends. >> until anyone proves otherwise, i believe he did nothing inappropriate. >> reporter: and the white house made clear the president still has faith in general allen
and the fbi and the cia are expected to brief lawmakers on exactly what they know about the petraeus scandal. that's going to happen later today. >>> the growing scandal is sure to be one of the big topics discussed with president barack obama's meeting with reporters today. it's the first since the resignation of director petraeus. president obama is also expected to get questions about the attack in benghazi that killed the u.s. ambassador to libya and also he'll be talking about the fiscal cliff. >>> as that deadline now inches closer, lawmakers continue fighting over how to resolve this so-called cliff. so what if they can't reach an agreement? according to a new "washington post"/pew research center poll, this was connected after the election, 53% of americans say the republicans and congress would be more to blame. 29% would say it would be president barack obama's fault and 10% believe the president and republicans would share the blame. the poll also found the majority of americans think we will go over that cliff before the end of the year. >>> since losing the election, mitt romn
